Cave of Olympi

The Cave of Olympi is located 10 kilometres from the port of Mesta and 5 kilometres away of the medieval village of Olympi. The decoration made by nature in the cave is beautiful. The cave has for the most parts a yellow-reddish colour. This colour is the result of carbonic calcium and the red-coloured argilic components that exist in the cave. In some places, the cave has white colour.
According to the scientists, the cave creation began 200.000 years ago, The temperature inside the cave is 18 C and is the same all through the year. The oxygen level is 20% and the cave is 74 meter deep. The decorations developed in the cave are extraordinary and have been given names. To the right there are the "anthropie ton spileon" (cavemen) which are shaped as people. Below the decoration is called the church organ, it speaks for it self why it is called this way.
The cave is active, this means that the creation of the cave is still in progress. The water runs 8 mm per year. The environment is very delicate and can be disturbed easily. That is why the entrance consists of a double door. This way no air can flow in unwanted ways.
