Ariston of Chios

Arsiton was born on chios and lived from 320 BC until 260 BC. He was called Ariston the Bald or the Scion. He was known to be a persuasive speaker and knew how to handle and humour of a crowd when he spoke in public.
Ariston was a student of the stoic Zeno of Citium. Ariston tries in his work to combine the Stoic and Cynic views. He believed most things had no value by itself and are neither good nor bad. He believed indifference was the only sensible attitude towards the daily things. Also he believed that physics is useless because they go beyond human capabilities. He thought dialectic reasoning was completely useless to daily life and compared it to a spider's web. The only thing he valued was Virtue because it gives the ability to make the right choices.
Ariston stated that a wise man is not led by opinions only by ethics. His biggest rival was Arcesilaus who criticised Aristion his views. At the academy of Zeno where many fierce discussion between them. Some say that Ariston made sometimes very personal remarks towards Arcesilaus in these discussions. He wrote, amongst other books, the dialog of the zeno doctrine, several books with discussion on wisdom and love. Roman stoics such as Marcus, Epictectus and Aurelius referred him in their work.
