The Turkish rule and a great earthquake in 1881, which killed 3,500 people left the island with nothing. After the liberation in 1912 the rebuilding of Chios began. Many churches and monuments from the Chiosian history are now rebuild and leave you in owe of their magnificence.

Today people make their living out of sailing and agricultural activities such as approximately 100 tons of mastic being produced every year.
